The re-introduction of the PST
How will it affect my window and door purchase?
For the last 2 ½ years, window and door purchases were taxed at a rate of 12% under the HST. That has now changed. As of April 1st 2013, a distinction is made between purchases of windows including installation, and the purchase of windows without installation (supply only). Windows purchased without installation are now subject to both the PST and GST. Installed windows and the associated labour is now exempt from PST. Only GST will be applied to the windows and labour.
Energy Star rated windows used to be exempt from PST under the old PST/GST.
Prior to the introduction of the HST in 2010, the purchase of Energy Star rated windows were exempt from PST. Unfortunately that exemption is now gone.
